Off-shoulder tops are everywhere this fall, and the question is always the same: what do you wear underneath so the straps don't show? The short answer is a bra with no visible straps. For most tops that means a strapless or bandeau bra; for one-shoulder and asymmetric styles, a convertible bra you can reset to a single strap; and for light, delicate fabrics, a stick-on adhesive bra. Which one you reach for comes down to your neckline and how much support you want.

Here is how to match the bra to the top, keep it from sliding down all night, and skip the small mistakes that give the whole thing away.

Match the bra to your off-shoulder neckline

"Off-shoulder" covers a few different cuts, and each one wants a slightly different bra:

Classic off-shoulder (Bardot): the neckline sits straight across both arms. A strapless or bandeau bra keeps the shoulder line clean.
One-shoulder or asymmetric: one shoulder is bare, the other covered. A convertible bra set to a single strap works here, or go fully strapless.
Wide boat neck that slips off the shoulder: a low-profile bandeau or an adhesive bra sits below the fabric so nothing peeks out.
Off-shoulder with a low back: reach for an adhesive or backless style so there is no band showing behind.

Once you know which cut you are dressing, the choice gets easy.

Strapless and bandeau bras: the everyday pick

For most off-shoulder tops, a strapless or bandeau bra is the simplest answer. A good starting point is the Convertible Bandeau Bra with Removable Straps (from $17.99): wear it fully strapless under a Bardot neckline, or clip the straps back on when you change into something with coverage. Because one bra handles both jobs, it earns its place in a small wardrobe.

If you want a bit more lift and a closure that is easy to do up, the Strapless Front-Clasp Wireless Push-Up Bralette gives shape without any shoulder straps and comes in XS through 1XL.

Fit tip: a strapless band does all the work on its own, so it should feel a touch snugger than your usual bra. If you are between sizes, going down one band size and up one cup often holds better. Measure against our bra size chart before you pick, since a strapless style is far less forgiving than one with straps.

Convertible bras for one-shoulder and asymmetric styles

One-shoulder tops are the trickiest, because a plain strapless can look bare on the covered side while the fabric drapes over it. A convertible bra solves this. The Seamless Wireless Push-Up Bra with Convertible Straps lets you move the straps to a single shoulder, a halter, or a crossback, so the strap follows the line of the top instead of fighting it. Set it to match whichever shoulder your top covers, and tuck the free side down into the band.

This is also the move for tops that start off the shoulder and then rise to one side. You get the clean, strap-free look on the bare shoulder and real support on the other.

Adhesive and stick-on bras for delicate tops

When the fabric is light, sheer, or very fitted, even a thin strapless band can print through. That is where an adhesive bra earns its place. The Strapless Adhesive Silicone Push-Up Bra with Drawstring (from $7.99) sticks to skin and uses a center drawstring to pull the cups together for lift and a little cleavage, with nothing across your back or shoulders.

If your off-shoulder top also dips low in the back, an all-skin option like the Backless Adhesive Push-Up Bra keeps both the shoulders and the back clear. Adhesive styles work best on lighter busts and shorter wear; for a long night or a fuller bust, a well-fitted strapless band usually feels more secure.

How to keep a strapless bra from slipping

A strapless bra slides down for one reason more than any other: the band is too loose. Fix the band and most of the problem goes away.

Get the band right: it should sit snug and level around your back, with room for two fingers at most underneath. The size chart helps you land it instead of guessing.
Use the grip: silicone lining along the top and band edge holds to skin. Make sure it sits flat against you, not folded or rolled.
Start with clean skin: for adhesive styles, skip lotion and powder so the cups actually stick.
Add fashion tape: a strip of double-sided tape along the inside top edge of the top itself keeps the fabric from sliding down, which is half the battle with a wide neckline.

Styling an off-shoulder top (and mistakes to skip)

Off-shoulder reads a little dressier this season, so lean into it: high-waisted trousers or a midi skirt, a layered necklace to fill the open neckline, and a blazer or cardigan you can shrug on when the room cools down. For a party look, a satin or knit off-shoulder with tailored trousers needs nothing more than the right bra underneath.

A few mistakes worth avoiding:

Leaving regular straps on and tucking them in. They work their way out. Take them off or switch to a strapless style.
A band that is too big. It is the number one reason strapless bras fall, not the lack of straps.
The wrong color under light fabric. Match the bra to your skin tone, not to the top.
A convertible strap peeking at a wide boat neck. If the neckline is very open, go fully strapless or bandeau instead.

FAQ

Can you wear a normal bra with an off-shoulder top?

Only if the top has a wide enough band of fabric to hide the straps, which is rare. For a clean look, a strapless, bandeau, convertible, or adhesive bra is the safer choice.

What bra do you wear with a one-shoulder top?

A convertible bra set to a single strap on the covered shoulder, so the strap hides under the fabric. If you would rather keep both shoulders bare, a well-fitted strapless bra also works.

Do adhesive bras stay up all day?

On clean, lotion-free skin they hold well for most of a day on lighter busts. For a long event or a fuller bust, a strapless band with silicone grip usually feels more secure.

Off-shoulder season is really just strapless season. If you want one bra that covers the most tops, start with a convertible bandeau and add an adhesive pair for your lightest fabrics.
